NYSC: My Child Won’t Be Silenced!

In the heart of our nation’s youth, a profound struggle is unfolding, and it’s time we not only recognize it but also take decisive action. The recent outcry from our young people regarding economic hardships is not just an isolated incident; it is a resolute demand for change, accountability, and an assertion of their inherent right to voice dissent against a system that has repeatedly ignored their suffering.

One brave young Nigerian has unleashed the truth and the courage to shed light on the ongoing crisis, boldly stating, “Every single week prices increase.” This simple yet powerful observation crystallizes the alarming reality faced by countless households. The relentless rise in the cost of essentials, such as the staggering price of eggs soaring to 650 naira, is an affront to every Nigerian determined to make ends meet. This is more than a price issue; it’s about dignity, livelihood, and the future of our youth—future leaders who deserve better!

As young Nigerians navigate the turbulent waters of adulthood, many find themselves encumbered by crushing responsibilities, responsibilities that come with no safety net or support. “I literally can’t remember when egg used to cost 800,” she shared, embodying the frustration that many are experiencing as they confront the harsh realities of daily life. Their struggles are exacerbated by utility bills that climb without warning, leaving countless young people feeling overwhelmed and exhausted: “Every single money that I have been making, I’m using it to pay bills. I don’t even get to live properly.”

But let it be clear: our youth refuse to stand idle in the face of such injustices. They are rising, demanding more from their leaders, and taking bold steps to confront authority. With fierce determination, this young woman posted her frustrations online, proclaiming, “Tinubu, you are a terrible president. What are you doing to help us?” Such words are deserving of our admiration, not condemnation. Confronting authority requires immense bravery, especially when intimidation looms, intimidation she faced firsthand when “the NYSC board threatened me to take down the video.”

That response from the NYSC Secretariat is alarming. Instead of engaging in constructive dialogue, they resorted to threats against a young woman brave enough to criticize the government. “I have my address, and they are still calling me to threaten me,” she recounted, underscoring a chilling disregard for the rights of citizens to express their opinions without fear. This is not only about silencing one voice; it’s about creating a climate of fear that threatens our very democratic principles and freedom of speech.

Now, more than ever, we must unite and demand an investigation into the NYSC Secretariat’s actions. How can an organization that is entrusted with nurturing our youth turn its resources against them? We cannot allow intimidation to stifle the voices of those who courageously point out the failures of our government. A thorough examination of their conduct is not only warranted, it’s essential to restore faith in a system that appears increasingly disconnected from the people it is intended to serve.

Let us not forget: our youth personify resilience and resistance. It’s our duty to rally behind them, support their cries for help, and amplify their voices. “I’m so overwhelmed and I’m so exhausted,” she declared, words that resonate deeply with the collective fatigue many feel. Yet, it is precisely this exhaustion that fuels an unyielding desire for systemic change.

As the grip of inflation continues to tighten around us, we must refuse to succumb to complacency. Let us march forward together, firm in our demand for responsible governance that genuinely seeks to uplift our struggling youth. Our collective voices, united, can form a deafening chorus that cannot be ignored.

Investing in our youth is not simply an act of charity—it is an investment in the future of our nation. We cannot tolerate a society where young people are disillusioned and abandoned while the government turns a blind eye to their grievances. As champions of justice, we must stand in solidarity with those who refuse to be silenced. When they cry out for change, we must be prepared to stand alongside them, ensuring that their voices rise, not fade.

Finally, I urge you all to deeply reflect on these pressing challenges and actively engage in the call for accountability. Together, we can forge a path for a government that listens to its people and strives diligently for the well-being of all Nigerians, especially our youth. The time to act is now; together, we must unite to build a brighter, equitable future for our nation.

Let’s stand together, let’s rise in solidarity for justice, and let’s demand a government that truly reflects the will of its people!
